Tae’s Teppanyaki

The next time you’re shopping at Don Quiote Kaheka or Palama market, make sure you stop by Tae’s Teppanyaki, it’s a must try.

Tae’s has to be on of my favorite places to grab a meal to go.  Once a Teppanyaki Chef at Restaurant Suntory in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, owner & chef Kevin ventured out and opened a lunch wagon in the DQ parking lot sometime around 2003.  He started off with one dish.  A steak roll wrapped around shredded potato over a bed of romaine lettuce & 2 scoops of rice.  Customers could choose 1 of 5 toppings that included:  Plain (Salt/Pepper), a wasabi sauce, spicy, teriyaki, or my favorite, the garlic which includes garlic chips.  All includes Kevin’s homemade ponzu dipping sauce.

From his humble beginnings he was able to open up a shop nearby on the corner of Kalauokalani Way & Makaloa Street.  Today, Kevin still serves the same famous steak roll with one scoop of white rice and one scoop of brown rice.  You can request all white rice, all brown or for those carb conscious folks, all romaine lettuce.

Now also on the menu, you can get a pork roll (served the same way as the steak roll), a NY strip steak, beef or pork bowls for those not looking to suffer from food coma and the sukiyaki bowl.

Prices range from $6 for the bowls, $7 for the rolls and $8 for the NY steak.  Soda or bottled water is also available and you can also dine in comfortably in A/C while watching the big screen TV on the wall.

I did wish he would serve chicken or shrimp…or for the vegetarians, some teppan-style veggies or fish.  But who knows, if you ask you never know!  Make sure you check Tae’s Teppanyaki out!
