Makapuu Lighthouse Trail

If you ever get the chance and are looking for some light exercise with some rewarding views, check out the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail near Alan Davis.

A few years ago the city paved a nice road and parking lot into the trail which means it now has parking and some security for your unmanned vehicle.  Depending on how fast you walk or run, it shouldn’t take you any longer than 25-35 minutes up to the lookout area.  Once there, you’ll be able to view the lighthouse, Rabbit and Bird Island.  On a clear day you can even see Lanai, Haleakala and Molokai on the way up the trail.

I recommend you go either early in the day or later in the afternoon when it’s less hot.  If you go earlier however, you’ll have time to check out the little private cove at Alan Davis where you can check out the tide pools, cool off in the water and even swing from the rope hanging from the log off the breakwater.  Make a day out of it and you can picnic there too!

Click here for a map to get there from Hawaii Kai or from the Windward side.

You can catch the Koolau's and even see Chinaman's Hat on a clear day

The cove leads out to little swimming hole where you can cool off after your hike

A closer look at the swimming hole. You can't see it but coming out of the breakwater wall there's a log with a rope attached to it where you can swing off of into the water
