Kuliouou Ridge Trail Hike

Kuliouou Ridge Trail is beginner to intermediate hike that I lasted visited during the summer before my senior year in high school.  Being that today is my 33rd birthday, that was 16 years ago!! So I decided, along with a few friends to check it out.  One of them hadn’t been there in just as long and the other had never been.

Today was a gorgeous day, and we got an early start. We hit the trail at about 8:30.  When you do the hike, depending on how fast you go, be prepared to spend anywhere from 2 to 2-1/2 hours to hike this trail.  It starts off pretty easy but towards the top it gets pretty steep so those with knee problems beware.  I’d recommend not hitting this trail on a damp or rainy day because the upper levels can be quite slippery with loose dirt and mud.  Check out some of the shots from the top, it’s pretty sweet!

Once you pass the green hut resting area, you’re about 1/3 of the way from the top.  The tree “doorway” indicates that you’re about to hit the steep part of the trail where the view from the trail starts clearing up.

When I see this doorway, I'm reminded of the Lord of The Rings trilogy where Gandalf yells "You shall not pass!!"

Koko Head...from a different point-of-view...

Yep, at the top you can even check out the Waiminalo side!

My favorite shot, you can actually see down the Koolau ridge, very surreal!

I bought a new camera and it takes panoramic pictures with the iSweep. This shot gives you an idea of the view from the top.

Well there it is. I hope you enjoy your hike just as much as I did.  Before you start the trail, there is a mailbox where you can sign in.  Be sure to do so…it’s a good way to let others know you’re on the trail so if they don’t see you logging out, they’ll know that something’s up and that you may be in need of assistance.
