The best of the best?

So the Christmas season will soon be upon us with Black Friday and Cyber Monday around the corner. Everyone is looking to get a head start on shopping so that they don’t end up scrambling the day before Christmas at Long’s or wherever else is open on Christmas eve…

Anyway, as I look for gifts for family and friends I thought I’d have a little fun with it and invite you guys to share your own opinions. One of my buddies is an 80’s movies buff.  He loves to watch and collect them.  So I was thinking for Christmas this year I’d get he and his wife a gift basket with some kettle corn popcorn and some DVD’s of 80’s blockbusters.  Needless to say he’s never on social media so it wouldn’t matter if I posted this or not.

So to quote a line from Top Gun….what is the “best of the best” 80’s movies you can think of? Here’s a few that come to mind (in no particular order).  There’s obviously a sh*t load of movies to choose from but I’m probably only gonna get them a few DVD’s anyway.  Oh and by the way…they’re more of an action adventure/comedy type of couple so if you were thinking of something like “Say Anything” save it for another day.

1.  Top Gun (1986). One of the most kick-ass movies of it’s time, this classic will always be around.  The first movie as a dude that I actually cried at when Goose died. Hey give me a break I was in 4th grade. The soundtrack for this movie will also live on as a must have for 80’s buffs.

2.  The Karate Kid (1984). Okay so how many of you goofballs out there actually did that standing crane thing every chance you got after you saw this movie?  Mr. Miyagi and Daniel-san had great chemistry and Ali (Elizabeth Shue) was an up-and-coming hottie so it was definitely worth paying the $3.50 admission fee to check this one out.  Sure it was pretty sad to hear that Pat Morita had passed away in 2005, but all of us will forever remember him as that little Japanese dude that kicked the sh*t out of Johnny and the punks from Cobra Kai dojo.

3.  Revenge of the Nerds (1984). It’s a good thing my parents didn’t know I was watching this…I mean naked girls, vulgar jokes, beer and more beer…this movie was the “Something About Mary” of the 80’s with the introduction of humor and lewdness no one was use to seeing.  Unfortunately, they came out with 2 or 3 more sequels.  They shoulda just stuck to the original.

4.  Better Off Dead (1985). I want my $2… that’s all you need to know…

5.  Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986). Sure when you think of a teenager in the 80’s, this was probably the first movie that probably came to mind. I hate to state the obvious that this movie is a bit overkill when it comes to 80’s popularity, but let’s face it…you had to have at least seen this movie once in your lifetime.

6.  Real Genius (1985). ahhh this movie is definitely a classic. I’d recommend it to anyone. Humor, light drama, love what else…? Sarcasm and a big ass house full of popcorn?  Real Genius.

7.  Weird Science (1985). This was the movie that kick started every teenage acne faced fella to experiment in their own home & make their own hot little fox aka a young Kelly LeBrock.  Can you believe the main character Wyatt (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) actually left the movie biz to be a college professor?  Or that loser of a bully Ian (Robert Downey Jr.) who was after LeBrock in the movie, is now a big time movie star?

8.  Back to the Future (1985). A recent winner of Spike awards most influential franchise of all-time….If you didn’t love this movie, there is something wrong with you.

9.  Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). The American Pie of the 80’s.

10. Willow. It was between this or The Princess Bride, but went with this one because there’s a little more action & the storyline is a little better.  Plus the instrumental soundtrack kicks ass.

Honorable Mentions I’d still watch:
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
Terminator
One Crazy Summer
The Dark Crystal
Risky Business
The Princess Bride
Short Circuit
Gremlins
Labyrinth

Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi
